From activity selection to your first invoice, here is what the UAE company formation journey actually looks like, stage by stage.
Company formation in the UAE follows a clear sequence. Knowing the stages in advance helps you prepare the right documents and avoid the delays that catch most first time founders.
Step 1: Choose your activity and legal structure
Your business activity determines which approvals you need and which jurisdiction fits. The activity also drives your legal structure, whether that is a limited liability company, a free zone company, a branch, or a sole establishment.
Step 2: Pick mainland or free zone
Decide where your customers are. Mainland suits local and government trade, free zones suit international and online business. This choice affects ownership, visas, office, and cost.
Step 3: Reserve a trade name and get initial approval
You reserve a compliant trade name and secure initial approval from the relevant authority. Names that imply regulated activities or that are already taken are the most common reason this step stalls.
Step 4: Draft documents and issue the licence
The Memorandum of Association is drafted and signed, then the trade licence is issued. At this point the company legally exists.
Step 5: Immigration file, visas, and Emirates ID
The establishment card opens your company immigration file. Residence visas are then processed for owners and staff, each with medical typing and Emirates ID biometrics.
Step 6: Corporate bank account and tax registration
With the licence and visas in place, you open a corporate bank account and complete corporate tax and VAT registration. Then you are ready to invoice. A straightforward setup commonly runs over three to four weeks, with banking following once documents are ready.
