UAE Corporate Tax and VAT: What New Companies Must Register

The UAE now has real taxes with hard deadlines. Here is what every new company needs to register, and when, to stay penalty free.

For decades the UAE was effectively tax free. That era is over. Corporate tax and VAT are now permanent obligations with real deadlines, and most penalties are not for owing money. They are for missing a registration or a filing date nobody was tracking.

Corporate tax at 9 percent

UAE corporate tax applies to financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023. Profits up to AED 375,000 are taxed at 0 percent, and profits above that at 9 percent. Registration with the Federal Tax Authority is mandatory for every UAE incorporated company, including free zone entities, even when the tax due is zero. Returns are generally due within nine months of the financial year end.

VAT at 5 percent

VAT at 5 percent applies to most goods and services supplied in the UAE. Registration becomes mandatory once taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000 over the previous twelve months, or are expected to in the next thirty days. Voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500 and can make sense when your clients are VAT registered businesses.

Do free zone companies really pay 0 percent?

Qualifying free zone persons can benefit from 0 percent on qualifying income, but the conditions are strict and include adequate substance, audited accounts, and income of the right type. Non qualifying income is taxed at 9 percent. Assess your position before relying on the 0 percent rate.

Penalties for missing a deadline

Late corporate tax or VAT registration carries meaningful fixed penalties, and late returns add further fixed and percentage based penalties on unpaid tax. Deadline tracking is the cheapest tax service you will ever buy.

The safest approach is to register correctly through the FTA EmaraTax portal, calendar every deadline, and file on time. That keeps the tax authority a routine task rather than a crisis.
